engine pull pix

here are some of the pictures we took during the pull, logan (badassfocus1101) still has most of the pictures on his computer, but i'm posting from mine. if anybody cares i can post more.

not sure what this part does, hoping to get an answer on this...

just a side view, about 1/3rd of the way through

the hitachi turbo... yay!

i was laying under the car taking the picture... right after we got the tranny out... logan was excited... i think... lol

tranny out, engine teetering, deciding what to do next...

Re: rippin it out

Awesome, Any issues getting that tranny out without yanking the motor?

Just did a tranny swap from my 88 to my buddies 86, we had a bitch of a time getting it out.

nah, cake. removed the 4 bolts from the back of the driveshaft on the rear diff. and slid the driveshaft off the splines on the back of the tranny, took the starter out and the bellhousing bolts, used a prybar to seperate the tranny from the engine, after removing speedo cable, reverse light switch wiring, crossmember, all the exhaust, heat shields, shifter knob and stick... part of the interior (don't think it was really required though)... it came out fairly easy, but that wasn't my first transmisson exp. with an RX7, me and two friends removed the tranny from an N/A rx7 and all related items and re-installed another tranny and driveshaft in less than 3 hours from start to finish in a cold garage in the middle of january last year.

the TOUGH part was getting the engine out. we didn't have an engine hoist avaliable to us... so while we were working on the car we put it on 4 jack-stands as high as they would go... once everything came out, and the motormounts were removed, and the engine was teetering in the engine bay, we lowered the front end of the car to the ground, we tipped the engine up on its front end, and logan crawled into the engine compartment, me and his bro lifted the front of the motor, logan got the back, we hoisted it onto the hood latch area, then we got it to the ground and ripped the turbo and related hardware off, and the rest of the intake and now its finally manageable. now to decide whether a rebuild is going to take place, or if another engine is going back in...

the darn car sat for a couple months awaiting decision, and when we decided to pull the motor we threw a battery in it, it cranked for like 5 seconds and fired right up... bear in mind we couldn't keep this engine cool for the life of us.. waterpump was fine, thermostat was fine, flushed repeatedly.. turned out to be the radiator, but the motor def. needs a rebuild as it ingests coolant into the rotor housings, probably from being overheated too much.

any help or suggestions capt. moe ?

Re: rippin it out

Try doing a rebuild on it. Not that it's going to kill you or anything. fi rebuild doesn't work. Get one professionally done.

We finished the tranny swap on.. Sunday.

The motor we pulled out of the 88 was litterally too easy. 2 of us, no cherry picker or anything, just picked it up and put it on the ground. Simple.

For a first time experience with rx7 the tranny was simple.

But, other then that I am just as new to this as anyone else :P

Re: rippin it out

rebuild sounds good and all, but ... someone correct me if i'm wrong its just looking too damned expensive... yeah you can get what you want that way, but... man, a decent set of apex seals is ridiculous... and then there's corner seals, side seals... and new bearings if needed. just not really sure at this stage of the game. we planned to rip the motor apart later today and see what the damage is, if any. but we'll keep ya updated!

Re: rippin it out

Awesome! as I got a block here that's been run hot and hard. Consumed coolant like no tomorrow.

Yes, I have.4 NA blocks sitting in my shop

Debating if I want to rip them apart and try and figure them out or what. Haven't thought about it enough yet.

Probably would cost a bit. But, hey it's a learning experience right?
