Looking to change my Airbrush, Badger to Iwata

Hi

I have a Badger Anthem 155. I'm very pleased with it but I now do more detail work than body painting. Now I have seen why people like gravity better. I was a big Syphon airbrush fan, but I need better now

I now use 98% of the time the small 7ml color cup that badger supply. So today I was sitting if front of one of my job and told me, why do I have a syphon airbrush if I always use small quantity of paint. The only advantage of syphon and I don't use it.. Why not changing !

When I need to work very close (small details) I still need to use 10-15psi to get constant airflow with my badger, and that cause over spray (work too close) To solve that, I have to move faster, and then loose control.

Now my question is: Does anyone changed their Badger Anthem, Crescendo, Paasche VL or any similar syphon "good" quality airbrush to an Iwata gravity feed ? I'm currently looking at the HP-CS which offer small details to 2". If anyone have this airbrush, what is the minimum air pressure to get a good flow ?

Thanks for help, and please, don't start a syphon vs gravity war, I already know all this stuff.

I haven't a great Iwata but I'm really happy to use on little details my Badger 100 GXF wich is also a gravity kind (little cup kind), it's able to draw a 0.1 mm line (from producer I think is little bit wide) It was useful in past on some II° ww airplane's camouflages.

another little thing: it's 19 years old, it cost almost like today's 160 usd, really well spended 19 years ago

Re: Looking to change my Airbrush, Badger to Iwata

thanks for comment.

My Badger Anthem can do "hairline" by the specs, but in real, it's just a bit lower than 1/8" inch (got big hair ? ). And for that, I have to use 12psi to get constant airflow and work quite fast (or I have over-spray)

This is why I want to change. The Anthem is an awesome modeling tool, and in fact, for 1/24 modeling it does everything I need it, but I do use my airbrush for other works now and I need more precision and something that will let me work at 5-7psi so I can take my time to make this detail

Re: Looking to change my Airbrush, Badger to Iwata

uh a n00by here,

i have an Iwatta Eclipse (syphon) and its great. Unfortunately i can't find smaller paint cups for it, this being the only downside (imo). I could use another brands paint cup but am a bit hesitant on buying one and finding it doesn't fit.

So i altered the lid of a paint bottle i'm using, to attach directly to my Iwata. Its working perfectly.

I haven't tried a whole lot of fine detail work with it, so i can't really help too much, sorry :S

There is a metal paint cup available for the Badger and Paasche airbrushes that might fit the Iwata. It should if the bottles are interchangeable.

I have an Iwata CR and i love it though its not real good for spraying bodies ( you have to keep filling the cup) but it is great for detail. i have sprayed Alclad Chrome with only 7 psi to touch up chromed parts cut from trees. works like a charm. you can get very thin lines if you unscrew the cap but be careful not to scratch the model with the needle when doing this.

Thanks for comment.

There is also the "new" HP-C Plus that look nice. But it's about 60$ more. Don't know what is the difference with the HP-CS.

You could always go for the Badger 360...it has both gravity and siphon feed, as the cup rotates and it'll take a bottle in siphon mode. I've not used mine much yet but I like the results so far - I'd previously used 2 Badger 100's for over 20 years. Super quick clean up too.

well as i said... if you have a good brush for painting bodies already the the Iwata CR would be a great addition to your tools. it can do many things fine and large. i couldnt live without it and i only paid $90 i think for mine. its a good quality brush and easy to clean if it clogs up. A+++

The Plus line has a few tweaks like more efficient paint cup, preset handle with cutaway and most importantly, teflon o-rings that are resistant to laquer solvents. I have a HP-C Plus, but have yet to use it, found the cheaper Iwata Revolution does everything I have needed so far. Worth the premuim over the basic one if you intend to use laquers.

The HP-CS also have the Teflon o-rings I think. Sure I use lot of Lacquer paint, so it's a must (and why I don't look for the HP-C)

If you don't use your HP-C Plus, I will be happy to bring this baby a new home

Re: Looking to change my Airbrush, Badger to Iwata

Sorry Eric, I actually intend to use the HP-C eventually, just haven't needed it yet. A West McLaren scheme comes to mind.

I guess Iwata might be seeing the sense of teflon packings and fitting them to everything now days. IIRC the Revolution was the first and the rest of the range could be following.
