98 Lumina replacing turn signal module

Ok, I have a '98 Chevy Lumina. Recently, the left turn signal started acting up(sometimes it will work, sometimes it won't) After asking around, I found that apparently the turn signal module(its a small black box with three prongs for plugging in) was screwed up. So I got a new one, but now I can't figure out where the old one is. I have tried turning on the turn signal while looking under the steering wheel, and can hear it, but I have been unable to locate it. Does anyone have any idea how I can get to it?

EDIT: Ok, I think the thing I'm trying to replace is called a turn signal flasher.

I'm having the same problem with my 97 Lumina! It started out with the left turn signal not wanting to work (or working intermittently), then the right...now neither of them work - I have to hold down the arm until just BEFORE it clicks to get it to flash - otherwise it won't work at all if you click it down all the way.

I had my mechanic look at it and he said to fix them is about $200! Are the parts cheaper if you do it yourself??

Re: 98 Lumina replacing turn signal module

I have a 98 Chevy Lumina also and I have a repair manual. It says the combination turn signal and hazard flasher is mounted to the firewall just to the left of the steering column under the instrument panel.

for replacement it says: remove the lower sound insulating panel.
Disconnect the electrical connector and remove the flasher unit from the firewall.
Make sure that the replacement unit is identical to the original. Compare the old one to the new one before installing it.

Hope this helps.

Just make sure it's not the turn signal switch which is inside the column. Seems almost everyone of these cars has trouble with them. I replaced mine with some tools I borrowed. Really a pain, but I got it done and saved a bundle. I think the switch itself was around $60. When you have to jigle the lever to get it to work is a sure sign its the switch rather than the flasher. Also the rear brake lights may not work and the high mounted one will.
