Domestics and Imports and my new 2006 Silverado
I just bought a new 2006 w/ the 5.3 V8.....
After buying it I hear that many folks have "piston slap" and "steering clunk" problems on Silverados up to 2004 model year. Has this problem been fixed? Are these problems common, rare, or always? I have been able to find out that in 2005 the brake issues were rectified with larger, better quality front rotors and calipers as well as old school huge drums in the back. My 2006 stops great!!! Coming out of a F-150 w/ the 4.6 V8 I was always happy that I never had the piston slap problem the 5.4 V8 did. I thought the piston slap was a Ford problem not a Chevy problem. I won't be too happy if my new Chevy has problem that my 1999 Ford w/ 175,000 miles didn't. That would truly suck. I had a 1990 Silverado w/ the 5.7 and it went over 150,000 with no trouble other than an alternator. I traded it in on a 1996 Silverado that gave no trouble at all. I traded it in on a 1999 F-150. The 1996 Silverado had over 100,000 miles with no problems. In the 6.5 years I had the F-150 I put 1 set of front brakes on it and a new battery 2 months ago. I never even replaced a single bulb in it. That being said I have always received top-notch service and reliability on all of my domestic vehicles I have owned. When I gought this new Silverado I planned on getting the better part of 200,000 miles without major problems. Was I right in assuming this or will the piston slap problems reduce the life of my truck? On the other hand my wife is an import snob and only drives jap cars and now BMW's. The Hondas she has had have damn near broke me in "preventative maintenace". Also the damn Accords have tremendous transmission problems. The Acura TL is even worse. Somehow everybody thinks they are bulletproof. They are not. The only adavntage is that their dealers are more accomadating than domestic dealers in my opinion..... While my wife's BMW M3 is a blast to drive it has had about every component fail on it except for the engine and tranny. Her repair bills over the past 2 years exceed mine over the past fifteen and I drive 3 miles to her 1. |

sounds like you got a nice truck. I wouldent worry much about not getting the better part of 200,000 mi out of it.
even if it developes piston slap, this is said to not harm any thing Ive also heard that the next heavier weight oil will silence this. the steering clunk I guess is bad berings, has been since 99, so maybe they have remedeid this by 06, although my 04 has it now but Im sure you will enjoy the truck for many miles |
