99 Avenger, replaced power steering pump, foam coming out of reservoir?
Ok, I figured I'd start a new thread on this just in case anyone else comes across this issue. I replace my power steering pump, and everything is hooked up. When I start my car up for more than 5-10
seconds I get foam bubbling out underneath the cap on the power steering fluid reservoir. I'm guessing there is air in the lines from when I replace it. What should/can I do to get the air out of the lines? Sometimes it really foams up and leaks all over. Any suggestions/tricks/techniques to use on this? I've read some stuff about turning the wheels with just having the ignition on. I'm sure it needs fluid and my guess is that it gets to the point it is sucking air. Ideas? Thanks for all your help! |

Check to make sure all the lines are tight. A loose line would leak but could also draw air into to lines. The foam is definetly from air in the lines. Most power steering systems are self bleeding. Just turn the wheel all the way one way then all the way the other way slowly. This will help to work out all the air in the steering rack and in the lines. Keep doing this and see if that solves it. Also, make sure to use the recommended fluid.

Re: 99 Avenger, replaced power steering pump, foam coming out of reservoir?
ok. I completely baffled. Anyone around ever replaced one of these on a Dodge Avenger and has been through this before or knows it well? Currently, when I start it the pump makes a grinding noise. I know there is a very small leak coming from somewhere around the pump, but I'm not sure where. There are three things connected to the pump, the two fluid lines, and where the electical wire attaches on the top. The pump came with 5 gaskets, yet I can only find a spot for 4 of them. Anyone know where the 5 gaskets go? My guess is my foaming/overflowing issue deals with having this small leak that is sucking the air in as mentioned above. I just can't figure out how to stop the leak. It maybe getting towed somewhere to be looked at. I thought this would've been an easy one. It does help that the pump is actually higher than the reservoir, so the fluid travels up.
