Grinding Noise, Power Steering Pump or Pulley
I have a grinding noise coming from my power steering pump/pulley area. It doesn't happen all the time. It doesn't matter if I am turning or not. It will however, when it starts, stop when I reach about 30-40 MPH. I know it is either the pump or the pulley. My guess is the bearings, but are they in the power steering pump or the power steering pulley. Any guesses? I already have the pump on order and plan on trying that first.

The bearings should be inside the pump. You could use a stethoscope to hear the noise more clearly or even feel the pump for vibration with the engine running but be careful. It is strange that it would quit grinding though if the bearings were bad. Seems like if they were bad it would grind all the time. But it could quiet down as rpm of engine increases. Try slowing reving the engine from under the hood and see if you can still hear it grind. Make sure to check the fluid.

Re: Grinding Noise, Power Steering Pump or Pulley
Every once in a while, my 95 avenger makes grinding noises when I drive it. And white smoke blows out the exhaust. Could that be from the power steering too?

I guess it is possible that the power steering pump is grinding but that would not explain the white smoke. You are going to have to pop the hood and find out exactly where the noise is coming from. White smoke is normally an indication of excess fuel that has not burned off normally caused by incomplete combustion. Upgrading the ignition can help with this. But if the smoke has blue in it then it is oil burning. You can tell by the smell of the exhaust too but dont inhale too much.
