94 Grand Cherokee transmission freeze

Christmas eve was driving home on the highway in overdrive at 70mph, RPM's shot way up and transmission went into what felt like neutral. Coasted off the highway, got a tow the 35 mi. home, and it hasn't gone back into a driveable gear since. It seems frozen in neutral. Also, after getting it home, when I started the engine, the temp. light showed hot, but the water in the radiator is cold. Any ideas? help!!

How long till you got home when you were towed? Water in the rad would have cooled down but the block might not have which would still make your needle go up. You have other problems, start looking at your drivetrain. Start with checking for fluid in the trans, maybe have filter changed and a flush.

It is the transmission that is the REALLY big problem. It won't go into any gear at all now, like it's stuck in neutral. There is transmission fluid. The guy we bought it from said everything was good, and it ran great. We only drove it for about 100 miles before all this happened.

You mean you just bought this Jeep and the tranny crapped out??

You need to check your states used car warranties. If you had bought it here where I live the used car dealer would have to fix it for a max of $100 from you. 3 attempts and no fix and you can demand a refund.

I'm a $10 cab ride to Logan Airport and I can walk to Kelly's Roast beef on the beach. :

We bought it from a private party. I think I might not be explaining this right. The rpm's jacked up on their own while driving at around 70. It slipped out of gear? Stepping on the gas just revved up the engine, did not move the jeep, as if in neutral. It goes into gear, and seems like it wants to move, but doesn't. The heat thing was the next day after starting it, and it showed it was running hot, but the water in the radiator was cool. It has trans fluid.

A coolant temp sensor is a $20 part and certainly within the realm of things ordinary people can do to keep their vehicles running. A transmission that doesn't go into gear is in most cases beyond what most folks can handle in their own garage or driveway. I hope that private party isn't another family member.
