Mileage

Hi, I'm thinking about purchasing a Celica as my first car.
I've found a 2002 GTS for around $7500
The mileage is a little over 80,000. I was wondering if that is a bit too much for a 3-4 year old car.

I've also found a 2002 Eclipse for about the same price with only 50,000 miles.

Both cars would be automatic (shame)
My parents are helping me pay whichever car I end up getting and they don't think a manual is a good idea for a first timer.

Please submit your opinions/advise

Re: Mileage

if they are autos then go with the eclipse. the 7th gen celica was not meant to be an auto. it is a good price but the auto is pretty slow. is the eclipse a v6? i would just look around for a manual, theyre not that harsd to learn and once you learn you will always be able to drive one. take it from a guy who bought a auto as his first car, autos are ok for daily driving but nothing beats tearing up the corners in a 5 or 6 speed.

Re: Mileage

Manual can be tiring in beginning, especially to your left leg. But I started with a manual and survived... and so the rest of the world except Americans, Australians, and Brits; which have the most automatics in the world. Actually, driving manuals feels better since you "get attached" to your car's response faster than driving an auto. Hence, if anything wrong, you'll definitely feel it. Not so bad of an idea really. Must you really get an auto?

Re: Mileage

I wish here in US it was mandatory to at least know how to drive a manual. I love my stick lol. A few of us have a passion for the stick, but you're right, most don't.

Re: Mileage

I'd agree. Eclipses are very very comfortable riding cars, as opposed to celicas. BUT, unless you're getting the V6, then really....how to describe it? like riding a car w/ turbo lag that last... all the way? seriously, I rode my friend's 4-banger bc I really tought its a fast car, being mitsubishi and all...but no. EVEN if you get an auto, the celica is still GTS...still the officially the fastest US-spec celica in stock form.

Re: Mileage

the v6 eclipse will be much betetr in auto form bc of the torque. the 7th gen celicas have little of that. the more torque a car has the closer its auto form will be in performance to its manual form.

Re: Mileage

ok but the kid was asking about the mileage, and it is ok with that many miles, its a toyota, the dsm will break, my bro's gsx worked fine for about a month and then the tranny was shot. my 95 has 200k and drives like new, all though i do change all the fluids, plugs, and wires regularly.

Re: Mileage

I begin to appreciate my 95 st... it turns out to be one of the most reliable, affordable, economical, fun car compared to every other cars owned by ppl I know (VW, Volvo, BMW, Dodge, Honda, Evo, Maxima, Altima)... and mine is the eldest of all w/over 135k.
