Replace stud on wheel...
Anyone ever replace a stud on the rear wheel? I'm getting new tires put on and the shop tells me I have a stripped stud. Are they difficult to replace? Is $50 too much to pay? Thanks.

The stud is only a couple dollars, and there is a tool which pushes the old one out. I don't know the price of this.....If the tool was $50 it would be worth it to do yourself.

Re: Replace stud on wheel...
Slimhall, try this old method: take a deep socket large enough to pass the stud and a 6" c-clamp and drive the stud in yourself. If you ever replace the front struts, you'll use this same method to remove the lower mounting studs. Good luck.

Re: Replace stud on wheel...
You can also use a tie rod seperator (the clamp type) to do it. I've used both and either method works just as well.
To install it, push the stud back in then place some washers between the hub and the nut. Tighten the lug nut with the wheel off and the stud will be drawn back into the hub. An impact wrench makes short order of this, but a ratchet or lug wrench also can be used obviously. You may want to purchase another nut as this process can scrape up the surface of the nut.
