Just Bought a 96 V8 Explorer XLT

Very nice truck in great shape. Few things i was curious about. It doesnt appear that the water temp gauge works. Also, the check engine light is on, although i had 2 different mechanics check the engine out and tell me it is fine. They told me i would have to pay Ford about 285.00 to turn it back off. Also, when you click the right turn signal, it doesnt work and makes a buzzing sound, but if you just hold it it works fine.

And finally, i swear it seems like the speedometer is a bit off. Maybe because i am not used to the ride or the V8 yet, but i guess we will find out. When im going 35 on the speedometer, it feels like im going 20.

There is a temp sending unit for the temp gauge. It is on the front of the engine, right side as you stand in front of the truck looking at the engine. About 17.00 at the parts store. Otherwise, its your gauge, which is a more involved repair job. Assuming here that the truck warms up normally and your thermostat is not stuck open - which you may want to check.

There is also a temp sending unit for the computer under the coil pack. It has nothing to do with your temp gauge - FYI.

To turn the check engine light off, disconnect the battery for 15 minutes. This resets everything, and the computer has to relearn some things, but it turns the light off. If the light then returns, something is amiss, and you will need to find out what code is being set and turning the light on.

To fix your turn signal, the multifunction switch itself is a common problem. You can get one at Ford or check prices at Rockauto.com or other online parts sites.

Not sure about the vehicle speed - can't imagine tire size making that much speed error, so if the vehicle speed sensor on the tranny is off, it might be the cause of your check engine light.

The V8 is a solid engine and tranny combo which will go many many miles if maintained.

Turns out i had a bad thermostat which was stuck wide open. Replaced it Christmas eve morning for a wopping 5 bucks and the check engine light is gone, the heater works now, the water temp reads perfect.

Thanks again.
