Of course they need to be twisted first, but disconnect the dogbone mounts and rock the engine forward then put a 2x4 between the alternator and firewall, this will give you more room to work, 3.1 I assume.

Also remove MAP Sensor.......

Rocking the engine forward with the 2x4 piece of wood is the trick. Leave the 2x4 in until done cause the engine won't sty forward otherwise. You can create just enough room between the engine and firewall to reach your hand/arm back there. Be prepared to piss & moan as your arm is scratched up though!

I also found removing the MAP sensor out of the way helps . Its located on the back side of the Intake Manifold (2 bolts). Also, using a couple long extensions and a universal joint on your socket allows you to reach the Plugs, but still operate th ratchet in the open above the engine.

Have Fun and don't buy cheap wires or you'll be doing it again sooner then you want to!

2x4 is 1 idea... but another is to buy a ratchet strap and attach it to one of the (dogbones)after disconnection) then find a secure place for the other end and ratchet it forward(on something solid not the nose cover)....it may allow for little more clearance and not so many scratches and not a chance of messin up anything near the Alt. ... plus a lil more safe if yer nervous about the wood....good luck

What about putting in a slave bolt in the right-hand dog bone mount as the Haynes Guide recommends? Does that not provide enough clearance?

There is a special tool out there,it is called a GM engine moving tool.It is like a clamshell with a 3/4" headed bolt and put in nuatral. All you do is put in place of the dog bone and run the bolt with a 3/4 socket with a ratchet. This is the better method than the 2x4 method.I use one and it is worth the money.Try a mac or Snap On tool rep or any auto parts store for this tool
