Re: Exhaust question

I was looking for exhaust for my 4dr before i crashed it and i couldn't find very many. i don't THINK it will work..it is probably too long, but i don't know for sure. If i were you i'd just go to a muffler shop, buy like a magnaflow muffler and get the piping done custom. you'll save yourself a lot of money this way.

How much will that custom piping cost to get it from the headers all the way to the back and a muffler Tip.

Re: Exhaust question

If your in a small town that has a muffler shop, it don't cost a whole lot, but if you go to a big shop i don't know what they will charge for running from the Header back. It only cost me $50 to get mine done on my civic with 2 1/4" pipe, which is the biggest you wanna go unless your turbo. My friends Prelude has 2 1/2" on his and its too big, moved his power band to top end and lost a lot of his torque.

as what happened in my hatch when i had 2.5 inch
but yea, go get custom done, its cheaper and better
the EG system is different, hangers are in different spots, they have one right over the rear flange where as our cars do not. and our muffler is under the trunk with the exhaust on the left side, EG exits on the right, so theres no where to mount the EG muffler unless u weld custom brackets etc etc

Re: Exhaust question

Tony
That is interesting about moving the power band to top end and losing torque.
I have been trying to tell them preformance people down in the blazer forum that they need to keep some back pressure on the exhaust system.
But the seem to think i am full of bull.
Good post and good info.

Re: Exhaust question

Well its actually quite funny with my friends prelude...if he wants top end he runs without the silencer in, if he wants some of his torque back he leaves it in, and they are very noticable differences. Arguing with most domestic guys about that is a loosing battle. I live at a circle dirt track that runs a FWD class, most of them being rednecks around here, assume running with an open exhaust helps since it does on the v8s, the v8 can push enough it doesn't need that much back pressure, unlike 4 and 6 cylinders. So most of them in the FWD class run with the exhaust cut off after the drivers seat, only because its a rule. Once I get a car going im keeping my exhaust on there. The easiest way i win that arguement is when i swapped trannies on my 240sx, once i got it all hooked up, i did a test run without the exhaust...loud as hell...no torque, got the exhaust back on there and got my power back.

Re: Exhaust question

do u think putting in a regular cat not a high flow cat would help with back pressure on a 2.5" exhaust? since right now i have a gutted out cat and a resonator, would a new cat help me out?

Re: Exhaust question

It could help, just go with a slightly smaller sized cat to create a little more backpressure and you should be fine.

I have an open muffler with a silencer aswell. Right now i have it off. So by putting it back on will i get more low end torque? or just more all around torque? I always thought that letting our cars breathe better will help hp gains like i/h/e thats why i got an open muffler in the first place..

Re: Exhaust question

you want some backpressure to facilitate scavenging, it keeps the exhaust velocity up, as well as keeping cold air from rushing back up there and cooking your valves (that only really happens on open headers). just keep in mind that the engine is much like an air pump, the faster air gets in and out, the more power is produced.

Re: Exhaust question

Yea what he said. Putting a I/H/E on does help gain some extra HP, but opening it up too much without having enough HP to make up for it, hurts you in the end. Thats why with a turbo you will be fine running 3".

If you get a custom exhaust made and just have a high flow cat and a muffler, no resonators or anything, and feel like your not getting as much torque as you should be getting, get a resonator put in. Not to mention the resonator will quieten it down some too, no need to be getting the wrong type of attention. When I get a custom exhaust made for my 240, which will be soon because I just drug my factory exhaust off, I'm gonna leave the stock cat for now, atleast 1 resonator, maybe 2 if its too loud and then the muffler all having 2 1/4". I would go ahead and get 2 1/2", but no telling when I'll actually get around to swapping motors and getting a turbo.
