2002 XLE front rotors

Need to have my front rotors turned and need some help. I have the disc pads off but would like to know how to remove the rotor. Is the rotor held by the dark colored lock nut. The nut appears to non metallic and screwed on to the axle. I tapped the rotor with a rubber mallet to see if it would come off but no luck. I know I don't have socket large enough for this lock nut. Or do you leave the lock nut alone and use some other method to remove the rotor?

That big nut does not have anything to do with the rotors. To remove the rotors you need to remove the caliper mounting brackets. If it's like most all Toyotas it should be 2 17MM bolts holding in on. Keep the brackets oriented to which side they came off of. They are different. Then if the rotor doesn't come off easily, screw 2 corresponding bolts in to the 2 threaded holes in the rotors. Tighten them evenly and the rotor should "pop" off. It is also a good idea to keep the rotors oriented to the sides they came off of so put some kind of marking on each one. I use white-out and put a "P" and a "D" for passenger and driver side on each one.

Thanks Mike, I called the local Toyota dealer this morning before reading your post and they said the same thing more or less. They suggested taping with a metal hammer between the wheel studs. After several firm taps the rotor popped off.

I used OEM disc pads for replacement and found out one thing that may help fellow forum members. According to Toyota part counter person the 2002 Camray is one of four models that had a mid year change in caliper design. Using the VIN number doesn't help determine which kind you need. Each design takes a different style pad. Naturally they stock the one I didn't need because it’s more common, but since I called them last Monday about pads and I was uncertain to what type I need they made sure to have both styles on hand. The OEM pads for front only; cost $32. Turn the rotors was $18 and brake cleaner was $4.

A few cuss words on my part, a lot of running around to pick up stuff and a lot self satisfaction of doing your own service works makes for a good Friday afternoon.

There are 2 pad changes for the 2002 and 2003 Camry XLE and SE V6's based on the rotor changes.

Rotor type A without the step design (rotor #43512-3310 uses PAD 04465-3350 Mark AK PA556H)


Rotor type B with step design (rotor #43512-48011 uses PAD 04465-33340 Mark Sumitomo PS558H)

This change was made to address brake vibration complaints

I have an '00 V6 5SP and the fronts lasted 150K in the mountians. I thought that was great!! The rear discs pads only made it about 80K, go figure. Must the be something about the all disc brakes. I should have gone with OEM but got the $20 pads. Bet they don't last long at all.
