its not a trojan but rather a rootkit. True it technically is not malicious however it does open a huge security hole for any spyware virus etc... so its potentially worse.
already there is a trojan at large that takes advanatge of it: a variant of the Breplibot Hopefully this will make more people realise how ridiculous some of the DRM technologies are such as the ones sony and company plan to inytoduce with blu-ray. On the rather plus side this rootkit can prove potentially useful since you can hide sofware from detection. Such as...lets say hide ripping sofware from DRM protection...oh the irony

Re: Sony BMG is planting trojan horses on your pc!
I think the lengths sony is going to is hilarious, when it is SO EASY to get around their retarded copy protection. First, turn off auto run on your CD drive. Then, play the CD like normal in WMP and maybe even rip it as a normal CD or, rip it live feed using your sound card. Easy peasy.

Re: Sony BMG is planting trojan horses on your pc!
Sony is still selling plenty of CDs, even though they "issued a recall" (wink, wink) of the affected CDs. A lot of the retailers don't know anything about it. Consumers don't know and don't care.
Most people will just yawn when you mention this stuff to them, but they're the ones who are running machines loaded with spyware and trojans. And they wonder why the machine keeps crashing and running slow. One problem I can see is when an employee brings in a CD from home and plays it on the computer at work. We all know CD autorun is turned on by default, and this stuff installs itself even before you click "yes" on the EULA. Since it runs cloaked, it escapes detection by antivirus software. How'd you like to have your information on some corporate server hacked by some script kiddie exploiting the holes Sony's XCP leaves open on the computer? Just another reason NOT to buy CDs, I'd say. |

Re: Sony BMG is planting trojan horses on your pc!
Oh, Sony is "fixing" it alright.
The patch they released to fix the problem actually made it worse, and exposed the machine to even more vulnerabilities. Everyone familiar with the problem now says DO NOT run the Sony patch, and DO NOT run Sony XCP infected CDs on your machine. Microsoft is working on a removal tool, and Sony supposedly "recalled" all the infected discs, but there are still lots of them on the shelves. Lord knows how many are already gift wrapped, waiting to be given as holiday presents. |
