How comes the 4 cylinder GS is better equipt to take boost than the v-6 eclipse? I would think that the more expensive model would come with a better engine???

Also, when you're changing your oil, is it safe to use the jack that comes with the car or should i use jackstands?? Been using the factory jack thus far and no accidents (knock on wood).

How do you know when your spark plugs need changing, other than when the car backfires!

I'm traveling for the holidays and someone suggest that I remove my battery before I leave...will that make any difference when starting the car when I get back. I don't have anyone who can start it for me while I'm gone.

Another thing, when I rotate my tires, how comes I don't have to have them balanced and aligned?

the 4G64 that comes in the RS/GS is a close sister to the 4G63t that comes in the 1G/2G turboed cars. it is very similar to a factory turboed engine....thats why its better.

the 6G72 is a close sister to the 3000GT VR4 engine. The 6G72 isn't a bad engine. Only the pistons are. Once you replace the pistons, the rest of the parts are good for over 400whp.

i use a pressurized/hydrolic jack(the ones that you pump with the bar) just b/c its available and very easy. the stock one takes too long.

when you are changing your oil, do you lower the car back down WHILE the oil is draining? or do you leave it up on the jack the entire time?

using the factory jack won't cause any problems.

sputtering while accelerating is another possible indicator. how many miles do you have on your car?

since you have a FWD car, the tires on the front should wear more than the tires on the rear. thats why you rotate. you always want the worst tires on the rear. the reason you don't have to get them balanced and aligned is b/c those shouldn't have changed. its not a bad thing to get the alignment checked every now and then.

if you notice that a tire is wearing unevenly, then you should get the alignment checked.

Re: Queries

nice eclipsed4utoo

I'll add the first question to the post above

hydraulic jacks are def. much easier, i bought a cheapo one w/ 2 jackstands at o'reilly for about 45$ or so, i would suggest getting a better one for maybe closer to 90$, and it helps in case you need to get under your car for any number of other reasons in the future

battery? i can't imagine

draining the oil when you leave it for a long time is amust
putting fuel stabilizer in is most likely a must

us GT guys don't only get the engine, but a front strut tower bar, sideskirts, more standard options and bigger wheels, and brakes!!

First off, I'd like to thank you two for sharing the knowledge. You have made life and ownership much easier for me and the rest of the eclipse owners. Thanks a lot man, really do appreciate it.

When I'm changing my oil I jack up the car and remove the nut to allow the oil to drain, when it stops I lower it some to get all of the oil out...

The car has 66,757 miles on it...I'd like to change the sparkplugs, what tool will I need to do this? Do you think I'm due for a timing belt and water pump change? At what mileage did you guys change your belts and water pump? Also, I notice that when I gear down to 2nd and the revs are high enough to keep the car from stalling, I notice that the car lunges forward a bit, is that normal?

Re: Queries

sparkplugs shouldn't be needed until after 100k miles if i remember correctly, they are designed to LAST!!!, have you done your 60k mile check up? belts are supposed to be done at the 60k mark, but many have gone w/o for a while afterwards w/o problems

don't worry about the battery or oil if your only gone for 3 weeks...i have gone 3 weeks w/o driving my car and it makes absolutely no difference.

Re: Queries

Yeah three weeks should be fine to have it just sit there. Like Elchicoloco86 stated it is recommended that you replace the belts every 60,000 miles. Personally I would go ahead and change the plugs and wires since your at around 70,000 miles, but you can go longer if you wish

Re: Queries

i would get the timing belt and spark plugs changed atleast. the spark plugs are not easy, and unless you have mechanical knowledge, i would suggest you take it somewhere.

its your call on the water pump....i didn't get it done. some people say to get it done. if it goes out, they technicans have to take all the parts off just like they would to do a timing belt change. so if you get it done with the timing belt, its like killing two birds with one stone.
