Air conditioning comes on when on defrost

Is this normal or is this just another electrical gremlin in my 96 Sunfire. I just recently bought the car and truely enjoy it, but there are several strange electrical problems that pop up with it. When I have the heat on and move the selector to defrost, my air conditioning light comes on and it seems like my compressor kicks in. I removed a fuse from under the hood that said Air conditioning, but it still keeps happening. I don't need the air for the winter, so is there another fuse that might disconnect the compressor, or is this normal for Sunfires.

On most of the newer model cars the AC compressor is designed to come on when the defroster is activated. This is a feature that helps to remove moisture from the air and eliminate steaming or fogging up of the windows. This is perfectly normal and I wouldn't disconnect anything else, just turn the temp selector up so that it doesn't come on if you don't want it to.

Thanks for the reply and I do remember something about that, but this seems to be different. My temp. guage is set at high and the air compressor still kicks on. You can feel the RPM increase to compensate for the air compressor running and the AC light is activated. When I switch the dial to defrost/feet, the light goes off and the compressor disengages.

The compressor will or will not come on depending on the outside air temp, when it goes below freezing the compressor will not turn on (the light on the controls might stay on) and when it is above freezing compressor comes on regardless of selector temperature, for the purpose (like Dad said) to remove moisture. (and only when using defrost).

The compressor always purge.

the a/c is supposed to come on while on defrost to lubricate the compressor if you want you can unplug the power wires that go to the compressor
