Auto tranny problems

Ok guys. I just bouth a 92 accord lx automatic with 178k on it. Let me know what you guys think is the problem.

1. when i shift it into park when the car is still on I cant get it out of park unless i turn the car off and back on again.

2. This car is shifting erratically it jumps in and out of gear all the time while driving at the same speed. sometimes if i put it into neutral and then back into d4 it helps but just momentarily.

3. no matter what gear i have it in it always shows a green light over d4 and a red light over whatever other gear i put it it. Also, sometimes while in d4 the light will flicker off and on.

4. as for the drivability, these symptoms only occur after driving the car for at least 5 minutes.



Please tell me if i need a new tranny or sensors or tranny computer.

You have either a transmission or ATU problem or maybe both. A D4 light on when it is not in D4 usually indicates an ATU problem. The ATU controls shifting points both up and down. As for getting out of park, what is the P light doing when it is in park? Is it on? If not, you could have a shifter position switch problem (dirty contact). The shifter position switch is under the center console to the left of the shifter. Do the other lights properly light except for the D4 light when you move the shifter? Get back to us with answers. The cheapest and easiest thing to fix is where you want to start. Other then changing fluid in the tranney, everything is expensive if that is the problem.

It's the TCM- Transmission Control Module. Replace it and should fix your problems.
