Mine goes in and out I'm told because of a connection to the computer - $500 so far . When it goes out, I have to turn the motor off for 5 minutes for the computer to reset. Is your's the same ? Have you found your problem yet ?

Re: A/C Goes in and out on my 92

Do you have the auto climate control system? If so check the codes in the climate control.

Diagnostic Mode of the Climate Control System:

This method uses several common commands in all stages of the "menus" :
"HI" = proceed forward
"LO" = move backward
"WARM" = up
"COOL" = down
"OFF" = back one level
"AUTO" = exit ECC diagnostics/override function.

1) With the key in "run"
2) Press"off" and "warm" at the same time on the control head.
3) First, it will check all the segments.
4) Then codes will display.
"00" idicates that no codes are present. A "1" prefix indicates
that the code is history, not current.
5) There are too many codes to list, but look for a 41 or 141 - this is
the passenger side air mix actuator circuit. If this code is present, you
can narrow your diagnostics down considerably. Whatever codes you get,
write them all down and then post what you found here.

AC/Climate Control problem codes:

DTC code Description

DTC 10/110 Ambient Temperature Sensor CKT Open or Shorted
DTC 13/113 In-Vehicle Temperature Sensor CKT Open or Shorted
DTC 15/115 LH Solar Sensor Circuit Open or Shorted
DTC 35/135 E & C Data Line Failure With Heater and A/C Control Assembly
DTC 38/138 Serial Data Line Failure With PCM
DTC 40/140 Driver Air Mix Motor CKT Open or Shorted, or Not Calibrated
DTC 48/148 Long Term Freon Loss
DTC 52/152 Keep Alive Memory Lost: Sets With Battery Disconnected
DTC 66/166 Low Freon

NOTE: A number 1 prefix on any diagnostic trouble code indicates a history DTC.

This indicates no freon (more than likely a leak somewhere in the system), and a faulty calibration of an air mixer. The 52 will set if the battery is disconnected and is no big deal. You will need to find and correct the reason for no freon before you can procede.

Great info HotZ28.

I see you are an auto instrutor. That's a tough job teaching kids how ot fix the newer cars. Please teach them all you can because we need the help.

BTW I spent 3 years living near oyu in Marrietta, near Dobbins AFB. It's got to be hot there now so stay cool.

Re: A/C Goes in and out on my 92

Yea, it is hot here, in fact today was 93 deg. so we do have a lot of air conditioning problems here. This is the time of the year for all the problems to arise. Usually the most frequent problem is low freon. If you have a system that is low on freon it will cycle off & on due to pressure fluctuations and that makes most people think they have other problems. Most shops now have recycle equipment, and they will tell you they need to suck your system down to determine how much freon you have, before they will add any. It is best to first check the line pressure to determine how the system is operating, prior to any other service. R12 & R134 will differ; however, if you have higher pressure on the low side and lower pressure on the high side than specified for your system, you need freon!

That is the ideal way to make sure you have the proper gas charge in your system. But hooking the guages up and watching static pressure as well as running pressures you can add your gas and get the right charge.

Re: A/C Goes in and out on my 92

You’re absolutely right, that is how we charged the system for many years prior to the EPA mandates. One other thing I failed to mention is, if you convert a system to R134a you only add 80% of the rated system capacity. R134a operates at a higher pressure than R12 both on the low side and high side.

DTC 40/140 Driver Air Mix Motor CKT Open or Shorted, or Not Calibrated. Code 141 is the same as 140, it just shows it as the passanger side actuator.

From post #4;

This one is located behind the glove box and looks like the pic below. You can buy them at Advanced Auto Parts or RockAuto, links below for about 37 bucks.
