RPM Surge at stopping

1999 LX 3.8L

As I slowed to a stop in front of a friends house (really slow). I was pressing on the brakes and the car was not completely stopping. Concerned as to why, I noticed the RPM were climbing over 2K. So I pop the trans into neutral and after a couple of seconds it calmed down.

It happened again later as I approached a stop light.

Any Ideas?

Re: RPM Surge at stopping

Sounds like the IAC. There was a post on here from way back where someone almost drove the van through the back of their garage because the IAC.

Thanks lewisnc100.

Took the IAC valve off and cleaned it, it was built up with carbon.

I seldom drive this vehicle, thinking back I do remember how low the idle was that morning when I started the van (when the surging occured), the outside air temp. was +20 F here in the midwest.

After cleaning, the cold idle was running up where it should have been.

Thanks for to lead on the IAC, I was able to find a link on another thread after searching this site. It had pictures and instructions.

Thanks again.
