The tranny is still available and is in good working condition.

You can swap it out by jacking the car up a few feet, removing the axles, unbolting the tranny mounts, then unbolt the tranny from the motor. You'll need to support the motor with a jack while you pull the tranny so you can slowly tilt the motor and tranny down, then slide the tranny off the motor and pull it out from under the car.
