Question 96 Jetta GLS taillights always on?

hello, on a 96 Jetta GLS, are the L & R tail lights supposed to be on as part of the daytime running lights feature? I have an electrical problem which leaves my tialights & center rear stoplight on all the time, that I am trying to diagnose. It would be useful to know if the L& R tail lights are part of the DTR lights thing or not.

Thanks for your replies

No they are not. It could be a grounding issue in the trunk or tail light housing area or an issue with the headlight switch.

I have the same problem, but when i brake, they light brighter. My third taillight is always on, too.

Will that do anything to my battery or damage anything?

Nicoleos, you probably have a bad ground connection back there.

Have you noticed any relationship to moving the ignition switch?

When i step on the brake, it lights the dash and makes a clicking sound, except when i have the ignition on auxiliary mode. Then, the lights come on automatically, but not clicking sound!?!

I still think there's a problem with the wiring in the rear. Possibly a bulb twisted in improperly.
