Re: Drilled&Slotted Rotors for STI
What has drilled and slotted rotor or different pads got to do with washing rims?

1) I want new slotted/drilled rotors, any recs?? 2) My OEM pads dust too much, do you know of ones that don't quite as much??? (b/c I'm tired of washing break dust off of my rims). ANSWER: 1) Well, before I give you an answer, why would you want slotted/drilled rotors?? They do ABSOLUTELY NOTHING. I don't care how many break manufacturers tell you they de-gas, clean surface, makes it more effectve, yada yada BULL SHIT. They do nothing. It's just for bling. Do you see any formula 1 cars with drilled/slotted rotors?? NO, b/c they don't work any better, (well, they have carbon fibre rotors so you really can't compare, but anyway). You can do some searches on this topic as to why they don't work any better, but unless you do some heavy rallying with lots of mud/water on your disc, your stocks work just fine. If you buy slotted or dimpled (which I don't have a huge problem with), Brembo may make some for STI, and powerslot, stoptech, DBA for sure would make some. If you want "better" brakes and have a few grands to throw away, you can get wilwood, AP, Cobb, Stoptech big brake kits. Unless you run a lot of track, you will not need them. If you are asking this question, I'm sure that you don't need bigger rotors. 2) OEM pads are relatively low on dust production. Pads wear and dust. That's just fact of life as death and taxes. I don't think you can do that much better than OEM. I've tried EBC green and AXXIS ultimate which are pretty popular, and they both dust more than OEM. how's that Ray? |

Cross drilled rotors offer some benefit when it comes to heat dissipation, but at the sacrifice of contact area for the pads. Regular motor vehicles really don't need them though as they never build up the kind of heat where they would gain any benefit from cross drilling or slots. Bonus point if you can tell us who pioneered ABS, cross drilling and slotting of rotors

Not at all.
To me, function totally overides 'looking pimp'.

Ray, I'm going to disagree with your comment about "dissipation" of heat. They do NOT increase heat dissipation, and as you know, slotting and cross drilling were not done to improve heat dissipation, but rather as means to let gas escape, which is an obsolete concept now that modern pads don't produce the kind of gas that used to cause problems. As you may know, heat dissipation capacity of an object is relative to surface area and its mass, as well as the heat capacitance of the metal. By cross drilling, you are removing mass, therefore reducing its ability to dissipate/lose heat. At the same time, you are decreasing surface area from the pad/disc contact surface, and as you mentioned, decreases brake efficiency, but at the same time increasing non-contact surface area in the axis of the drilled holes, thus somewhat increasing surface area of the entire brake disc. Basically, decreased mass negates its effect of heat loss/dissipation by slightly increased surface area, so there is no benefit there. There of course are other points to be made such as decreased strength of the disc itself, decreased rotating mass, deglazing of the pads, yada yada yada. But anyway....we agree on the point. No reason to get slotted/drilled rotors. |

Re: Drilled&Slotted Rotors for STI
You're right Keita, my mind is elsewhere tonight...sorry....I was thinking of dissipation...but in the wrong sense
And you're right about the strength loss, it's the reason Porsche stopped experimenting with cross-drilling in the 70's, they kept having disks break during races.
