Lifters ticking?

I have a '96 lumina and it started ticking about a year and a half ago. It has definetly been getting louder. A lot of people have told me that it sounds like the lifters. Does anyone know where to get them for cheap and how to change them? I do have automotive experience, i just haven't ever ripped engines apart. I am more of a body man, but i can figure most out so if you know how, please respond, this noise is driving me crazy!!! Thanks

WHAT ENGINE?

If this is a 3.4, I'm told that the early engines had a problem with camshaft play. GM has a fix for it that involves re-sizing oil passages. I would expect that a '96 would have that improvement already, though.

Re: Lifters ticking?

Could be the infamous piston slap also, especially if it goes away soon as the engine warms up a bit, I had this for 170k on a 97, 3.1.

Re: Lifters ticking?

I have a '96 lumina 3.1 and that sounds like my exact problem. It makes all kind of knocking and ticking noises when it is cold but as soon as it gets up to temp it stops. What did you say causes that, and how can I fix it?

Hmm. That gives me something to look forward to then. I love that car and the 3.1L motor is ok, but now that I know it has that problem I can start to build my next motor. I was thinking about getting a 3.8L supercharged motor from a monte or regal and rebuilding and building it up. Does any one know if all the mounting points and basic setups are the same? Also reading through that site it pretty much sounds like you just drive it til it dies, but have you guys found any tips or tricks that work? Thats for the input.

All my GM cars have had noisly lifters. Haven't really found a decent fix for it.
