I have a 1995 Chevy Lumina Van, 3.1 (S) on the vin. I have had numerous problems with it and have ran out of ideas to get it running again, other than replacing the engine. I have replaced the hoses, thermostat, temperature censor, pressure tested it, there is no blue smoke, no antifreeze in the radiator, the oil is fine. we had a problem with it over heating and it went away as soon as I replaced the bypass hose. Now the last time I drove it it started to stall, then even with my foot to the floor it would not go over 15 MPH, and went threw 1/2 a tank of fuel in less than 5 miles. I have tried to get it to start since it acted like it may if I gave it some gas, then it just started to click. I cut of the cat.converter, hoping that may solve my problems, no luck. The spark plugs where rusted in so bad that they broke off and we had to use an easy out and a vacuum. I have the front three out, and am almost afraid to get the rear three. Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you. |

Re: Lumina Van, 3.1 engine problem?
I have a 90 lumina eurosport that had some similiar problems. It wouldn't take gas very well & the converter got really hot. Replaced the converter with no luck. Turned out to be the ignition control module ( where the coil packs connect to). Each one works 2 cylinders, mine had 2 bad so it was only running on 2 cylinders. I took it off & a local parts store tested it. You might check out that possibility.

Re: Lumina Van, 3.1 engine problem?
could definitly be an EGR or maybe a fuel pressure regulator... which should be rite off of the fuel rail somwhere.

Re: Lumina Van, 3.1 engine problem?
Sounds like overfueling to me, which will cause the cat to overheat and melt down eventually.
Fuel pressure regulator would be a good bet. Even if the EGR were stuck wide open, at full throttle it would overcome that and run strong. It sounds like it is just flooding out as it drives along. With a pressure gauge connected to the rail, turn the key on and watch the reading as you clamp the return line shut. If it spikes, the FPR is bad.
