98 motor swap into 97 cavalier

Hi guys, wondering if some of you that know something about cavalier motors can help me out.... got a female here. I have a 97 Cavalier RS, 5 speed, with 102,000 on the motor and it has a terrible knock to it while running. Today at work I received a 98 Cavalier in, automatic - totalled, but the motor is good and it only has 68,000 on it. I am receiving this motor for 85.00 (the tow bill for this car, since our body shop did nothing to the car and the guy gave me his title.) I need to know if I can do the engine swap cause people keep telling me that they won't swap out with each other. Can anybody provide me with a definate, correct answer, and if it does not line right up, could you please tell me why or what I would have to change. I would really hate to pay my body man at work to remove the engine... and then it not work. Thank you so very much guys.... any help would be greatly appreciated !!!

Re: 98 motor swap into 97 cavalier

If the donor car has a 2.2 OHV it should work just fine.

On your 97 try the knock sencer. Don't know if that is it though. But i know on the 97-98 on 98 they changed the motor a little, they made some changes to it so it would run smother, and it looses 5hp. So the motor mounts might not line up. not shure though. So i would try to fix yours frist. Or check the mounts on the 98 and yours and see if they are in the same place.
