Angry Rear window shattered

I have a 94 3000 GT. I was going to work yesterday, with no one around me, and KA-POWIE;.....all of a sudden, my rear glass just exploded. Shattered. Big time. Sounded like a 45 right by my head. Powerful enough to launch glass all the way wedged into the front dashboard, and also put a 500 nicks on the rear spoiler. Quoted price for the glass (available at dealership only-$735, not to include 150 for the install, 180 for moulding, 50 for tax--roughly around $1100 total), is absolutely insane!! Should be illegal to run monopolies on auto parts. Has anyone out there ever heard of such a thing happening? Does anyone know if this may be a future recall, and if so, would I be able to get reimbursed? Also, what may have caused it to happen.
Thanks,~mike

Re: Rear window shattered

go to www.3si.org (you can signup for free as long as it's a non-yahoo or hotmail email address) and there is a for sale section. get the window from there. there is always people parting out cars. also, do you have full coverage insurance on your car? if so, insurance can pay for it.

I have a hatch laying around as well. If you were close enough I'd sell is very cheap.

watch out, lest Gateway jump on your ass.

at least you recognize your own stupid advice for what it truly is. add glass coverage and a few days later make a claim? HAHAHAha! only if you're a noob. that's gotta take a huge moron to do something that stupid. i would think the insurance police would raid your bed that very evening for insurance fraud....since it would be....hmmm, blatanly freakin obvious?

[excuse my belligerence and lack of coherence...i'm a bit inebriated.]

Ive seen something similar happen on a Celebrity wagon. If it was cold out, and it heated from the inside too fast, its like throwing a heated glass into water.

Also, were you playing with your subwoofers? seen that happen too ;o)

I've actually added glass coverage only to have my window broken by a rock on the highway a few days later. no questions were asked of me.

Thumbs up Thanks gang

I have gone ahead with the install at a local glass shop, who purchased the glass from the dealer. The price stood firm-1132.57 total. OUCH!! But, it is fixed for now, at least. Yes, it was cold that morning, and I had the defroster on, but the dealer said that wouldn't be enough for it to blow. In my honest beliefs, I think that the defroster malfunctioned and overheated the glass or heated it too quickly. In hindsight, I do seem to recall hearing a teeny tiny crackling sound about 10 minutes prior to the explosion. It's been in there for about a week, and all is well thus far, except my paranoia. I will either spend the extra 100 a month for full coverage, or look into that glass insurance suggestion.
It's a nice car though. Purchased from Pops for $500 and another $1000 for tune up and brakes. 125,000 miles on her, still runs strong with a bit of hesitation throughout all speeds. Still researching that. Also, I think the AC compressor is bad. It looks like it's leaking fluid and also makes a rattling metal sound while at idle only. Once car is moving, noise dies down quite a bit. Just had her up to nearly 125 on my way home from work yesterday. Had plenty left. Took my buddy for a ride down a country road near here, and he had the perma-grin for a half hour after we got back. Thanks for all of your advice on the glass issue, gang. I appreciate your help and advice.
