My 98 chevy silverado 454 / 7.4L idles high and/or fast and burns about a quart of oil every 250 miles. it idles around 900 - 1100 rpm. i took it to a dealer and they couldn't figure it out. drove it like that off the lot like the about 1 month ago when i bought it, thought it was an easy fix. any suggestions? Thanks, Sean

The high idle they can't fix? Carboned up idle control, vacuum leaks, tps out of adjustment these are things to start with, I'd be more worried about oil consumption first.

Re: 98 chevy 454 idle high / fast and burns about a quart of oil every 250 miles
I would check for vacume leaks. The high oil consumption would be associated. If the intake manifold is sucking oil thry the center vally area. You could also do a compression check and a leak down test. That would verify the condition of the pistons and rings. With that much oil I would think you would see it thru the exhaust pipe as white smoke. If it only smokes on start up then I would say valve guides. So more checks are needed. ALso check your PCV system and make sure the PCV valve is not stuck open. Do a vacume check that should also confirm a leak you may have. One method may be spraying WD-40 around the intake area where it mates to the heads but if the bottom portion of the intake then it wont show. I have a 99 454 and the upper intake comes off rather easy. The only bad part is the EGR pipe on the back part of the intake. It normaly seizes up and makes a hard removal. Other than that easy to take off. This is the upper manifold. The bottom the only thing is the fuel fittings is a bear to take off. It should take a day at the most to remove and reinstall.

I took the truck to a local automotive shop. they found the problem. there was a bolt that was missing in the bottom of the intake manifold, which was causing a vacuum leak causing it to idle high and burn oil. they found the bolt and it was almost going to get sucked up into one of the cylinders. close call! then they replaced the IAC motor. now the idle is at 600 -700, right where it should be. Thanks for all your help.
