Tranny question 94 Grand Cherokee
I've got a basic question, and any help is certainly apreciated. I've got to replace the transmission in my 94 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4x4. Can anyone tell me years of the transmissions that would fit? Also, is there a difference between a 2x4 and a 4x4 transmission, or is it just the transfer case? Fill me in.... Thanks so much!

Re: Tranny question 94 Grand Cherokee
First of all, you need to determine which transmission you have.
Go to your Jeep dealer with your VIN # and get them to print the line sheets with all the original equipment listing for you. From what I can remember, you should have either a 42RH or a 42RE but it may be different. The major difference between the 4wd and the 2wd transmissions will be the output shaft and the tail housing. The tail housing simply unbolts but the output shaft change requires the dissassembly of the transmission. Once you know the transmission model, the rebuilders or recyclers will fix you up ok. Come to think of it, they should be able to come up with the correct transmission with just the year, engine type and 2/4wd info. JD |

Mes0003: Does your Jeep have the 5.2L (V8) engine? The 94 5.2L (with quadra-Trac 249) uses the 46RH Tranny. I have an spare tranny from a 95 5.2L, that is a direct bolt up, I got it with my jeep along with another TC and Engine, I swapped the engine out (due to an engine failure I had) and was gonna replace the tranny at the same time but since mine had no problem I decided not to. I did notice that the bolt pattern on the FLEXPLATE (flywheel) is different between the 94 and 95, so I had to use my flexplate from my old engine so the bolt holes would line up between the engine flexplate and Torque converter. So just wathc out for that, maybe it was just that tranny, I'm not sure. |

It is called a salvage/bone yard interchange book. Every good bone yard has or should have one. They get down to the nitty gritty on interchange. MY

If you have the 249 and are swapping trannys with a 97 then you should be good, as far as I know the 242 transfer case input shaft is longer then the 249 this is the only problem with swapping these 2 transfer case (you would have to swap the input shafts to get the 242 to fit in the tranny, in place of the 249) But if you have a 249 in your jeep now and you are swapping trannys from another jeep it should fit. If you have the 242 TC and the tranny (from the 97) had a 249 equipped in it then you will need to swap input shafts. WOW! I hope I got all that..... |

Re: Tranny question 94 Grand Cherokee
no you should be ok, the 249 should bolt up to the 97 tranny.
