99GTP fixed and all the probs..:-(

I had that 99GTP that was all messed up makin a bunch of engine noise, black smoke off the exhaust, and missfiring... took it to the shop turns out the plugs were completley burned out.. timing chain was messed up...oil pump was bad causing the noise... cost me just under a 1000 bucks to fix but they through a free water pump on it cuz they had to reorder the parts czu they were sent the wrong ones...

thanks for all your help...now i just gotta figure out how to fix my RPM needle onlyworks if i hit the cluster any ideas?

Hard to say whether you got ripped off considering the water pump, oil pump and timing chain were replaced. Those jobs are tedious and labor consuming jobs even for a mechanic that knows what he is doing. Personally, I would not shell out $1K for those type of repairs even with an alleged free water pump. Just my 2 cents.

I hope you got a limited warranty from the shop.

bnaylor wouldn't shell out the $$ b/c he could do the work himself. If you can't do the work yourself, or don't have the tools required then you didn't get "ripped off" you just had to pay for a few hours of labor.

bnaylor - timing chain you pretty much have to get all the way into the block don't you? at least what 2.5 - 3 hours for the teardown and rebuild??

Yeah I pretty much agree if you can't DIY it then you are SOL on labor. $1K doesn't sound unrealistic because it includes parts.

Timing chain job is a PITA. Everything on the engine front end has to come off - alternator, tensioner, water pump, crankshaft pulley/harmonic balancer, sensors, etc. The oil pump is no fun either because you have to loosen motor mounts and jack up the engine to remove the oil pan.

your best be on this would be clubgp.com. go to the forums and check with the guys there, at worst, I would think you need a new instrument cluster. of course, if you could take the dash trim off and remove the cluster that's there now, you might be able to fix the problem without alot more $$

He was given guidance in the following post where he posted the issue separately. No need to go to Club Med.

He's got a habit of making multiple posts.

lol. It's just an internal joke. But there is some good info over there especially on mods, etc. BTW - How'd your latest mods work out?

I'm getting ready for Phase III for the next racing season. Just saving up some more money first.

Very well. I had a few issues with the notorious KR but with some race gas and FWI that was solved. I also found a guy that built me a 3" Mand DP, kinda like the Jimmy C one. he's shipping it out today and hopefully I will have it in by Fri for the last track night.

best run so far is a 14.3 @ 96, my 60' is still a little slow (2.24) but i am gonna fix that this FRI

What are you planning for phase III?

Still a good run. 0 - 60 foot times will improve with practice and better tires. I switch over to Nitto Drag radials for the track.

Phase III - SLP 1.8 roller rockers with the improved pushrods and lifters. And 3.0 pulley and transmission oil cooler. That should get me into the consistent high 12s. Thats pushing it because I don't want to blow my tranny. It's the original and has been a good friend for 8 years.
