Re: Clinic Model - Singapore Intl Motor Show in 1992

Don't forget the rumor that it may have been blue at some time

The great book doesn't make it completely clear what exactly the Clinic Model is made from. I suspect that most of it was hand laid fiberglass as that would be the most cost effective for a mockup like that. It's definitely not a complete carbon fiber chassis waiting to accept a drivetrain. That honor went to XP1. Neither is it made from cheap plastic panels and knock-off parts. I'd say it falls somewhere in between those two categories from what I can gather.

Remember the quote from Driving Ambition: "with the exception of the engine bay, asthetically complete in every respect both inside and out"

A lot of what you see were probably early sourced prototypes of the production bits. Some things were obviously still in the 'yet to be determined' phase, or at least had not reached final sign off.

BTW: I just figured out where I got the idea the Clinic Model had been painted blue. Inside the AutoCar "McLaren's Road Car" book it mentions the car as the 'Studio Model' and says "Originally finished in bright silver ("Magnesium"), it's since been painted red, blue and is currently yellow." The book came bundled with the March 2nd, 1994 issue of AutoCar.

So that would make two vehicles with a 001 chassis plaque. The clinic car must be what's in that famous photo of the interior without the windsheild on it, there's a full page one in Driving Ambition and the plaque reads 001. And actually, the clinic car chassis plaque has been the first thing we see when we crack open DA but we've never known it until now!

Well yes, but without the keyhole it's obvious which would be the real one.

It most certainly is. This shot of the chassis plate, and the shot you are referencing are both from the Launch Brochure.

I thought about that, but doesn't that chassis plate have the GTR wreath logo on the right hand side of it? I don't have a copy of the book close by to check.

You are correct, sir. I forgot about that. It reads '001' but the GTR logo has "WINNERS 1995" on it, so it would be impossible for any car made at the time to have the number 001 to have that GTR logo.

I saw that, but I don't think that car is real. It also appears black to me.

Here's the only visual evidence that the Clinic Model was ever blue. Of course the AutoCar McLaren's Road Car book also states that it was blue which is fairly convincing. I suspect that this drawing may have been done when the car was blue, and if so this could be an accurate representation of the blue color it wore.
