Unhappy 84 Cherokee after Stalling Will not start for hours

I have a 1984 Cherokee that will run for about 10 to 15 min then stall for no apparent reason, after it will not start back up until I've waited a few hours sometimes overnight.
Ive checked to make sure i have a spark and fuel. everything there is fine, it sometimes sounds as though its going to start, almost like a flutter, but nothing else

Any Help Would be appreciated greatly
Thanks
Joe

Re: 84 Cherokee after Stalling Will not start for hours

well i just bought an 86 cherokee 4.0 2wd that has on the last two days stalled just after warm up + 1 mile....from the many posts i have read the cps crankshaft positioning sensor is many times the culprit. my jeep seems to have it replaced somewhat recently but i also read that the sensors wiring contacts get corroded(as do many of the sensors contacts). there are many posts on it and how hard it is to access. about a 60. part. do a search for cps and look for a post by capt apathy(lol). i am going under the hood and clean mine up as i located it within the first 24 hrs, now i need to see what extensions etc i will need to get it out when the time comes. good luck

I have an 88 cherokee, same problem. I replaced the cps(crankshaft positioning sensor) and now all is good. Then the distributor went and took out the ignition control module. The cps is located on the backside of the motor, the plug is located on the top. Follow it down and check the wires, the have a tendency to get frayed and melted. I'll tell ya right now replacing it is loads of fun.

Those last 2 posts will not apply to an '84 Jeep, as all '84s had carburetors and no electronic engine controls as you have described.
It would be handy to know if you have the AMC built 4 cyl or the 2.8 L V6, made by Chevy.
Generally, it sounds as if you might have a bad ignition coil. When those bad coils heat up, the electrical resistance in the coil windings goes up just enough to weaken the spark so they won't run. When cold, there is just enough spark to make them work. Also, they will have enough spark to show if you test for a spark with the plug out.
If you test for spark when the engine has warmed up a bit, the spark should be big and blue. If its faint and waek, change the coil.

Stalling like the 84 but I can start...

It back up. I posted under another thread as well as this one. It stalls while I am driving it's an 86 cherokee. I can get it started but wants to die soon as I try to accelorate. I pump the pedal a couple times and it will slowly work it's way up sometimes but the other times it just dies out. Also stalls when I apply the brakes to make 90 degree turn unless I keep my foot on the peddle. If ya have a solution I would appreciate it. Thanks

Replace the ground on your fuel pump.
