97 1.5 a/t hard shifting

1997 protege a/t is the hardest shifting little a/t i,ve ever seen. do all these protege,s act like that? especially from 1 st to 2 nd gear. i noticed the a/t fluid is higher then it should be on the dip stick.it,s at the top of the hot check spot when car is cold. it should be down in that cold check zone. right? could this be the reason??

Did you ever get an answer? Our Protégé sometimes the overdrive light comes on and it won't shift from 1st or it shifts rough. You can turn it off, then turn it back on and the overdrive light goes off and it runs fine. Can you tell me what might cause this?
