89 5-speed throwout bearing
Okay, if you didn't see my previous post, I pulled my tranny out (89 Escort 5-speed) due to some clutch problems. Well, I'm renewing everything but it seems my problem was the throwout bearing (ball bearings scattered around and nothing left but the cup). Anyway, the new bearing (came with clutch kit) doesn't seem to fit "snug" on the input shaft of the tranny. there seems to be some play. I've only done one other clutch before and it's been awhile. Is the throwout bearing supposed to be snug with no play? I can work the clutch fork back and forth and it works smooth but I'm concerned with the "sloppiness". Is this normal or what? I just want to make sure I'm pulling not this thing out again anytime soon. thanks for any help you can give.

Re: 89 5-speed throwout bearing
I haven't done a clutch in a long, long time but it seems to me that the transmissions used to have a brass sleeve that fit into the hole you are talking about. I would think the too much slopiness would give you a bad high-speed vibration because the clutch disc might get slightly off-center.

Re: 89 5-speed throwout bearing
I think you're talking about the sleeve the throwout bearing fork goes through. I don't have sloppiness there. I'm talking about the bearing is kinda sloppy on the input shaft of the tranny. It's like the bearing is too big for the shaft. It's actually just a little sloppy, but I don't know if it's suppose to be "snug" you know like a wheel bearing. It may be okay bacause I know it has to slide back and forth on the input shaft unlike a wheel bearing that's stationary. I just wanted to be reassured before I put the tranny back in.

Oh, OK. I follow you now. I was referring to where the tranny shaft fits into the engine.
