service engine soon and a nasty smell

My service engine soon light has been on for a while now. After I had my new alternator put in the light went off for a couple days but then came back on. I went to Auto Zone since they have free service engine soon test thingys and they tested it and told me its a Systems Emissions Leak and that they would turn the light off and if it came back on to simply ignore it because it's not a big problem. Well now my car is giving off quite a foul smell and the Service Engine Soon light is on again. I can't exactly describe the smell. It doesn't smell like anything is burning and it doesnt smell like rubber. Could this be related to the Emissions leak? My car also starts and immediately stalls sometimes. Any idea whats going on? This problem really bothers me and I don't feel safe in this car at all yet after all the problems I've had with it but my mom seems to toss my concerns out the window. One day in the future I'll be driving along and the car will just blow up. I hate this car.

Re: service engine soon and a nasty smell

Do you know the exact code that they pulled from the PCM? What engine do you have? I'm not exactly sure with the description you gave, but its obvious there is a leak in the exhaust system. That's where the smell is coming from and that's what is meant by "emissions leak".

When it was scaned, what did they say the code was? they should have told you. w/o that, its hard to say what it could be.
