2001 Grand AM Brake Light on all the time?

The brake light is on all the time. A friend with access to a code reader pulled a C1247 from the ABS Diagnostic test. The service manual says check the brake fluid (which I did ) but the scanner said the LEFT FRONT ABS FREE SPINS. The brakes appear to be working OK.
Has anyone had a similar problem or can offer any advice?

Re: 2001 Grand AM Brake Light on all the time?

Are you talking about the ABS light or the Brake light? They are two different issues entirely. If the ABS light is on then there is a problem with the ABS itself such as a wheel sensor or a problem with the ABS itself. If the brake light is on that means there is a problem with pressure in the system such as a leak in a line or a wheel cylinder. Have it checked out by a mechanic asap if it is the brake light.

by the code you got, I'd say the wheel speed sensor in the hub is shot. It's a common problem on these cars. If you do the job yourself, do not use impact tools, as you will damage the ABS sensor magnet on the new hub and will be doing the job again within 3 months.

It's the brake light, not the ABS warning light.

If it's the brake light, you need to have a look. Like GTP said, that light indicates a pressure loss in the system, usually indicating a leak. If you don't get it fixed immediately, you could end up wrapped around a tree. Check the harness to the low brake fluid sensor in the master cylinder, it may have come unplugged or have a broken wire.

Re: Re: 2001 Grand AM Brake Light on all the time?

I have noticed no difference in the brake pedal at all.
If I have a leak ( not visible in the driveway ) wouldn't I see it in the master cylinder reservoir or the pressure to the brake pedal.
Thanks very much for all your help.

You should but if you have drums on the rear it could be leaking into the drum and you will never see anything externally. It is also possible that you have had a drop in pressure that made the plunger move inside the system to the point where the light came on and it simply needs reset. But no matter what you do get it checked.

I think "richtazz" hit the nail on the head.
I unplugged the harness to the low brake fluid sensor and the light went out. I believe the sensor only goes to ground. Do you see any harm in leaving it off until the weekend when I can get a good look at it?
Thanks again.

It also could be that your emergency brake switch has a short in it...
Or you could release you emergency brake.....
