Did i BREAK my tranny?!?!....84 gl 4x4 wagon

so i was driving along...came to a stop...girlfriend was messing with me, so in the idea of "dont mess with the driver" i revved the engine and popped the clutch....car jumped a bit, but then just lost its grip on the engine......i thought it had just popped out of gear...engine still running...took it out of gear and put it back in....let out the clutch normally, and nothing...didnt move...put it in second..nothing...back into first...nothing......shut it off and pushed it the block and a half home...once in the driveway i started it up again...put into reverse...let out the clutch, and it moved...put it into first...IT WORKED....checked a few times...back and forth...all seemed well again..............My question is this.....what happened?...why does it work now?...is ther some sort of transmission safety mechanism?, so that if you rev it too high and dump the clutch, it pops it out of gear, and the only way to reset is to put into reverse?..(or shut off engine)...or did i do some serious damage to the tranny?.(which why then does it work now)....its an ordinary 84 subaru GL 4x4 wagon 1800 carb motor 4 spd tranny with hi/low 4x4.......

Sounds more like the clutch is what caused it. Maybe the thruster bearing got stucked- did you notice any difference depressing the clutch pedal? has the clutch bean slipping in 4-gear?

ya know...really, it felt exactly the same...it was really surprising that it didnt move, because it felt like it should have worked great....felt like it shifted into gear normal...but just didnt move when i let out the clutch..........just drove it last night and everything seemed good....4th was great too....absolutely no issues anywhere....its really weird...it just seemed pissed that my girlfriend was messing with me...and as soon as she wasnt around it started working great.....(it has exibited a dislike for women in the past)....
