Valve Cover Gasket....Silicone???
Hello,
I posted previously regarding the cost and replacement of valve covers (top pan gaskets) for my 1992 Crown Victoria. Since the cost is nearly 100 bucks, my mechanic suggested that maybe he might be able to make it using silicone. He says that he's done it before for other engines, just not the 4.6 V8. Anyone know any reason why this wouldn't work or might cause trouble?... Thanks. |

Re: Valve Cover Gasket....Silicone???
The way the valve cover is made for a molded rubber gasket it will not work very well.
It is strange for one to leak. Is the hold down bolts lose or leaking? Pull it and look at it and see if you can see why it is leaking. 100$ sounds high for valve cove seal/gasket. Where are you getting the gaskets? MT-2500 |

Re: Valve Cover Gasket....Silicone???
I priced it at the auto parts department of a hardware chain here in Canada. I didn't check with the Ford parts department though. Do you think that I might be able to take one off a scrapped car and reuse it?...Pisses me off to spend 100 bucks on a gasket. The guy who owned my car before me said that it needed the gaskets but he didn't bother get them, and he had just continued to tighten up the bolts for awhile, but I guess it's just a temporary fix....
