ETS Light comes on when ever it feels like....whats making it do that

I have a 98 cavalier 2.4 liter......It seems like when it gets warm out, The ETS light pops on. Does anyone know what could cause this. When it pops on the car jerks like someone hit you from behind. I noticed that if i put the car and neutral and turn the car off then start it back up it resets itself........but only for a little bit. If anyone can give me some insight on this it would be greatly appreciated. Thank You
