off topic, but 1st gen crx related

i'm writing a paper on what makes us (1st gen crx owners) so devoted to our rex's. i'm looking for info such as your background with cars, why you chose the 1st gen as your ride of choice, and why you're an enthusiast of the early honda's.

for me, it all started when i got my 85 crx a couple months ago. i've always had a passion for the 1st gen but never been able to get my hands on one until accidentley seeing one for sale in the paper while looking for a motorcycle for my brother. right then, i knew it had just begun. i don't know if it's hareditary, but i think my love for cars has been passed down to me by my dad who used to be a mechanic. to me, there's nothing more rewarding than working on my car.

thats the same with me my dad is an aircraft mechanic and had himself a sweet car (71' chevy 2 door custom impala) taht he worked on when he was younger so i love to work on my car and with him but i also just like the car because its small and i like to do body work on it ( which i also througholy enjoy) because you're not dealing with alot of space and they are dependable cars and get good gas milage.

Re: off topic, but 1st gen crx related

They're fun, cheap, lightweight and sporty looking.

I bought my first CRX SI almost ten years ago for $2,500. I bought it because my girlfriend at the time couldn't afford a car, so I bought the CRX for her to drive around. Since I've always been into restoring classic American cars, I didn't spend to much time on the CRX, besides it had already had some mods done to it by my friend who sold it to me. Anyway, we broke up and I sold the CRX to buy another project car.

I got my second CRX SI for free a little over 2 years ago. My friend was getting out of CRXs and had one that he drove into the ground by delivering pizzas in Downtown Seattle. He asked me if I wanted it otherwise he was going to donate it to charity, and since I was driving a gas guzzling 1960 Cadillac Coupe Deville, I thought I might be a good charity for him to donate it to.

The car was not running and hadn't been for months. My friend couldn't figure out what was wrong with it and didn't want to spend any more time on the car, so he took it to a mechanic. The mechanic told him it was going to need an new ECU, timing belt, head gasket, blah blah blah, and that it was going to cost him $1200 to fix (wasn't going to happen). So I show up at his door to pick the car up, and I get it running within about 10 minutes with just an allen wrench. My friends jaw DROPPED and I drove it home!

Since I can't leave anything stock, I started modifying it and found out how cheap these cars are to build and have been hooked ever since!

Like most, I got the tinkering bug from my Dad. I used to help him build Harleys in our garage. He got me started when I was old enough to hold the light for him (about 5yo). I bought my first car when I was 14 and had rebuilt the motor, tranny and reupholstered the interior by the time I was 18. In High School, I got to skip beginning auto mechanics and go straight into the advanced classes. My instructor said he would have given me double credit if he coud, because I had done more than anyone else ever had. Not only did I work on my own car, but I helped others work on theirs, and worked on the shop drag car. I still see my old shop teacher at my local machine shop from time to time.

Re: off topic, but 1st gen crx related

Well, my story is close to Aquarius', since he's my brother.....

My dad has been an aircraft mechanic with the Air Force for years. 21 years of service, and he is currently employed by a company that has a contract to work on the air craft at the Air Force Base here. He loves to turn the wrench, and he's passed it down to us.

My first car was an '86 Chevrolet Nova 4dr hatchback. It was slow, but me and my dad had alot of fun working on it. Once, we dropped the transaxle, changed the clutch, and had everything running in just 8 hours! The guy over the Auto Hobby Shop here on base was speachless.
The next car, I actually purchased, and was a '96 Ford Thunderbird. I love the size and power, but it's an automatic and guzzles the gas... One downside to any V8.

After having that for few years, a friend from high school who graduated about three years ahead of me, decided he was going to sell his '87 CRX Si. I had driven it in highschool and fell in love with it. But this was 5 years since then, and I wasn't sure. He was asking $800 for it, but I thought it was too much for a car that hadn't ran in a few years. Finally, I talked him down to $500 cash, and made my treck down to pick it up. Made the 1 and a half hour drive (which took 3 hours since Sturgis, MS was having bike week and my route went right through downtown...) to pick her up. Went down, placed the $500 in their hands, signed a bill of sale, loaded her up, and drove home (I went around Sturgis on the way back...). I was on cloud nine. I had no idea what was wrong with it, but I had it! That was all that mattered. My dad called me crazy at first. He said he wouldn't have given him $300 for it, but he was a good friend who needed the money.

So, now I had the car, and the task of finding out what was wrong with it. Searching for Honda CRX's, brought me here, to this wealth of knowledge and great people to share things with. That is what really tied me to my little CRX. Having a community that supports others with the same interest is great. If you look at the other forums, none are as active as the Honda forums. A good community, and an old dream is what drew me to love my lil' RexSi so much. I hope to pass this thing down one day, providing they still make duct tape.
