Smile Slight oil smell on start up

Hello everyone. I just completed my first 500 mile roundtrip in my new to me 99 GM with the power and handeling pkg. w/50K miles. Drove and rode like a dream except for two minor things.:1st. a couple of times following start up, i could detect a light oily smell for a few minutes then would fade away? no oil build up on the interior windows, no lingering odor, no detecable oil on upper engine or drips under the car and it hasn't affected my oil level??? 2nd: a slight engine clatter going up hill with the cruise traveling around 80? sounds like the timings off. any helpp on these two things?? thanks in advance

The slight engine clatter is probably insufficient EGR. Check passages in intake and valve itself for proper function. DPFE valve on EGR system is famous for failure. As far as the oily smell, is it coming out of the vents? Could have a small pinhole in AC evaporater. Is the AC good and cold? Also could have a slight valve cover leak dripping onto exhaust manifold when car sits.

Re: Slight oil smell on start up

Took it into the shop for my 50,000 check up and it checked out okay and of course they couldn't smell anything. It does come through the vents but it doesn't smell with the air on

Re: Slight oil smell on start up

Could be the heater core with pinhole and possibly antifreeze mixture you smell. Check under carpet or floormat on passenger side for dampness or oily feel.

The oily smell is probably burning oil.
