Well, got my implants today!

Yep, my driver's seat has gel pad in the ass section now. So far it seems pretty nice. The seat is noticeably more plump than the passenger seat. Here's what they did:

Bottom seat cushion - Rebuild and reinforce foam back to factory shape. Add 1/2" Gel pad.

Seat back - Rebuild and reinforce foam back to factory shape. Add 1/4" foam layer.

So far, seems nice. I have to climb up a bit higher now to get into the seat, and I sit up higher in the truck with the rebuild and extra padding, but it's much more comfortable. The gel pad really takes out the bumps and vibrations on the road. I was really surprised. I hope it lasts awhile.

For those in the area that may be interested, Superior Auto Trim in Bellevue did the job. Ended up costing $330, which is pretty good with the gel pad installed. That alone was $80 of the bill. This is the second time I've had them rebuild a seat and I highly recommend them. They have different options available to meet your needs. Of course, you can't change the shape of your seat too much, but having the right kind of padding sure helps!

I will be driving about 1000 miles this weekend, so I guess I'll find out what it's like for the long haul.

BTW, the guys there really liked my truck. Not that I was surprised!

Yep! Very pleased with the seat. I did about 800 miles of driving over the weekend and it was great. The gel pad really soaks up bumps and vibrations and I don't sink down into the metal frame anymore.

Only thing is I need my sliders now so I can get over the bottom cushion bolster. It had flattened out over time, but now with it's newfound plumpness combined with the extra thickness from the gel pad, it's quite a step up into the seat. I kind of have to hang my feet out now and just kind of jump to the ground!

Anyhow, I am very pleased and highly recommend that folks with seat discomfort issues consider having them restuffed. With the seat covers on, I can hardly even see the difference between the driver's seat and the passenger seat, so it's OK to just do one. Even without the covers on, it's not very obvious. Someone would have to be looking for it, I think. The seat just looks a little pregnant. There is hope for the factory seats!

Not meant to be derogatory or anything, but are you pretty short? At 6'1" my head hits the roof in my X. If I pad the seat out any further driving my truck would be a painful operation. I am just wondering how much they raise you in the seat?

I'm 6'2". I had a little room above my head before, so I could afford to move the seat up a bit. I'm pretty close now though, probably an inch or less away. I'm not exactly skinny either, so I had broken down my seat some and that gave me extra room. The gel pad added about 1/2" to the seat bottom, but I think just rebuilding it back to spec. added another 1/2" or so too. What I could use is a bit more leg room.

You must have a long torso?

I bet a good upholstery shop could keep the seat the same height for you and just put better material in.

Correction! There is only about 1/2" between my head and the roof now. If I put the seat into a more upright position, my head will touch the trim around the sunroof. It's fine though since I wouldn't like the seat back that far forward, and will probably settle a bit over time.
