Noise From Dashboard...Very Puzzled!!!!

My 99 GTP makes a constant mechanical sound from the dashboard. Even though it stops doing it sometimes, it starts right back. It is not very lound, and with the stereo on, or the window rolled up, you cant hardly hear it. I tried to narrow in on the sound and it was the loudest through the glove compartment... . It sounds like the tape deck but i don't know. I have the 12 cd changer and i have no idea whether it is related. The sound is like a constant mechanical one that resembles a tape deck trying to play a tape but is failing. Could it also be the passenger air bag???? Please help...very confused!!!

My dashboard started squeeking a lil while back. Where the rubbery plastic plate that covers the passenger side airbag was contacting the rest of the dash, there was a little play. I wedge a tiny sliver of black tape under there and the noise stopped. Not sure if that helps but it stopped my wierd noises.

I bet you have a blower motor going south. Does the noise change pitch as the blower speed is changed? IF so then that's your problem. The blower motor is mounted under the dash, below the glove compartment

It makes a sound even when the blower is turned off. Actully, the only way you can hear the sound is when the a/c is turned off. The sound is not squeaky or anything like that...which is usually associated with the motor or fan going out. Instead it is more like a mechanical sound which keeps repeating. It sort of sounds like the tape deck changing sides and is the loudest when I open the glove box. I opened it completely and peeped inside and it seems like some mechanical device on the top left corner of the glove box (i mean, on the inside of the box). I am totally confused, and so was the mechanic whom I showed it to. I appreciate all your help and hope someone can resolve this for me...I haven't found any thread that relates to this problem...probably cause the sound is hard to describe. By the way, it doesn't make the sound all the time, instead, it comes on and goes off by itself. Also, it is pretty low, and you can only hear it with the windows rolled up and the stereo/ac turned off...but its there!!!!

does this device making the noise have a GM service number or part number on it? It sounds like it may be the ABS module, as that is located above the glove box. The theft deterrent and rear defogger relays are mounted in that area as well, and would click also.

I'll check it and get back to you...and thanks a lot for the help with my wheel bearings. I figured out how to repair it by myself....this is the first time I'm doing this soort of repair. The only question I have is that should I get a new axle bolt after I remove it, and if so, what size?

Re: Re: Re: Noise From Dashboard...Very Puzzled!!!!

Do you have a manual HVAC system or dual digital climate control where you can control both the driver and passenger sides?

The temperature control actuators will make a motor type noise or slight buzzing sound. The noise will vary in frequency and duration based on your temperature settings. The passenger side temp. actuator is located on the left hand side of the glove box opening.

Just my 2 cents and the only thing I can think of.
