Tune up, high flow air filter, and NGK spark plugs.

Also remove the plastic plate under the air filter (in the filter box), and remove the useless ducting under the car leading up to the filter box.

Don't bother with the ECU and injectors. I did this with my SI but converted everything back to stock when I couldn't pass emissions. The car ran too rich for the sniff test.

You can also take about 50+ lbs off the car by removing the spare tire, jack, carpeting, sound deadening and panels from the back of the car. Lighter car = faster car.

Swap the brakes!
You can either use the '86-'89 Integra 4 wheel disc system, or use the '86-'89 Teg front brakes with lighter '84-'87 CRX HF aluminum rear drums.

That's about as far as you can go without investing more than $100 into parts.

Question Re: Re: 87 crx si budget mods??

cool, i live in florida so we dont hav any emmissons test or anything. i had 2 1/4 inch pipe for my exhaust installed from the headers back (with no cat). around here if a car runs, its street legal. since im not worried about the "sniff test", would the ecu and injectors give me more power? and if so is there an aftermarket version that i can use. if i feel like spending a little money, wat bolt-ons should i consider. i was thinking about headers next but im worried about "back pressure", would headers and my exhaust be too free flowing, an if so would the integra ecu help??

Re: 87 crx si budget mods??

GET A HEADER!

As far as the ECU and injectors go, alone they will only make your car run rich, which does not give you more power. But if you fabricate an adapter plate you can get rid of the tiny 1G SI throttle body and bolt on any other larger D-series TB. However, even after these mods you won't get much gain in power without also having a more agressive cam.

I'd say, do the free/cheap mods and save your money for a motor swap.
