New bulbs (foglights on 1st gen 3kgt?)

I just got new silverstar headlights for my 1st gen VR4 and they rock. now i want silverstar's for the fogs... but what the heck is the fog light part number? i've been to 4 places. (walmart, checker, red rooster, and advanced auto) and none of them have a fog light listed. what part number do i need for the fog light on a '93 3k?

-Josh

EDIT

I was just down looking at it all and i cant figure out how to get the damn things off/out. I took off the 4 clips and the cover does not pull off. do i have to take the one screw located above the light fixture out as well? (i am thinking it's an adjustment screw)i dont have any of my tools handy so i can't dig in too deep. anybody done this before that can give me advice? thanks.

Re: New bulbs (foglights on 1st gen 3kgt?)

The fog lights are sealed beams and as you can tell they have their special little shape so the automaticly make them a dealer product.

and for geting them off im am still trying to figure that out. (i just now got mine lol).

i dont know what trim level you have, but on my vr4 i had to remove the air dam and pull the bulb from the rear. 5 or 6 bolts and the dam drops. Just unhook the clip and the bulb pulls out. Should be a wall-mart part. 10 minute job. That help you at all?

Also, forgot to mention, after you unhook the clip, the bulb doesnt come out of its little metal holder. if you follow up the wire a few inches, youll feel a quick-connect type connection. Just pull it apart. The bulb is sold as that complete unit (bulb with like 3 inches of wire). i got mine at Advance for like $5.

NO, the foglights are NOT a sealed beam. the headlights on a 1st gen are sealed beam...that is the actual bulb is fused together with the bulb housing. for the foglights, the bulbs can acutally be removed from the foglight housing.

simply just remove 3 bolts holding the foglight to the bracket, then disconnect the electrical connection. (this is for the NA, for the TT, i think you have to remove the front air dam, as BlinkRA said.) once the foglight is out, twist the black plastic fixture on the back, and it will come off, revealing the back of the bulb assembly. unhook the metal spring and the bulb will come right out. NOTE: the bulb is attached via wire to the Positive wire lead in the foglight housing. You will need to disconnect the metal connection (male/female) before the bulb+wire is completely disconnected from the housing.

as BlinkRA said, the foglight bulb comes with a wire attached to it. do not try to remove the wire from the bulb, as its suppose to be there. rather, go down the wire and you will see where the wire is attached to another wire. disconnect the wires at that point.

the foglight bulb is an H3 type bulb. they're found everywhere. As BlinkRA said, you can pick one up at your local auto parts store for under 5 bucks.

i've taken my fogs apart and put new bulbs in. i have them out again to puy hyperwhite bulbs in to match the headlights. (i did the H4 headlight conversion, so i can change out the headlight bulbs). once you have the fogs out, this would be a good time to make the wire connections male/female quick disconnect...instead of having to solder the connection all the time or even just mash metal together with pliers.

Re: New bulbs (foglights on 1st gen 3kgt?)

tools? borrow these from a friend:

3/8 ratchet
~6" extension
10mm socket
needle nose pliers (maybe) [regular pliers would be fine]

--if the friend has no ratchet&socket, then find a 10mm wrench. if no wrench, then perhaps you could do it with pliers (vise grip pliers would be nice).

there's always more than one way to skin a cat. so if you're just itching to do this, the above tools should get you through it.
