87 tercel clutch job
Hi--
Does anybody have any advice on doing a clutch job on an 87 Tercel wagon (2wd). The manual lists a bunch of special tools that are needed but I'm not sure I believe the manual. I've done clutch jobs on rear wheel drives but never on a trans-axle. Wondering if I'm over my head on this job and should just spend the $700 my mechanic wants. Thanks, John |

if your mechanically inclined do it...i did mine in the dead of winter in the snow...there should be no special tools...they probably list special tools like flywheel holder, seal puller/installer...whatever...but it's pretty straight forward. Bell housing bolts, undo the knuckles, pull axles drain fluid, pull starter, disconnect crap from up top, undo tranny mount, it's not that bad...if your going to do the rear main, you may need a flywhell holding tool. I just used an air gun to run the flywheel bolts on...if you worked non-stop, had all parts/supplies, and weren't getting the flywheel cut, you should be able to do it in about 4 hours.
Definitely check your rear main seal while the trans is out, definitely worth doing beings it's like an 8 dollar part... It's up to you...I just choose not to let garages do my work...hope i helped. |

Re: 87 tercel clutch job
ditt0 .... did mine in my buddy's driveway in about 2 days (Needed a few parts, had to be ordered)... its cake. pop the two strut bolts out on each side, pop the halfshafts, starter, shift cables, slave cylinder.... etc. its not hard. hardest part is gettin the fucker back in there.

Re: 87 tercel clutch job
Thanks for the info guys. No snow here, just warm Calif. blacktop--I'll be more than happy with two days if that's what it takes

Does any body out there know if the engine in a 2 wheel drive wagon is the same as in a 4 wheel drive. 1983to 1986. Could I put a 4 wheel drive engine and transmission in a a wheel drive? |
