Same old problems

I've been reading all posts, and everyone seems to be running into the same problems that I am, but there doesn't seem to be a consensus fix.

When my car starts, (year 2000, which has about 100,000 kms) the low fluid level light (red) is usually on, the change oil light (yellow) is usually on, and the engine light (yellow) is on about 50% of the time.

The change oil light turns off quickly, followed by the fluid level light. If the engine light is on, it stays on.

Relatively quickly, within minutes and well below 1/4 on the temp, the car sputters, loses power and rpm's drop low, kind of like a hiccup.

When the temp hits 1/4, 90% of the time it will stall when the revs drop low enough, usually at a stop, or a slow turn.

The signal lights work intermittently as well.

If you are all sick of hearing these problems, I apologize, but I'm looking for somebody who's had these problems, and did something definitive to get rid of them.

The change oil light is easily remedied. Look in your owner's manual for the procedure. I think you hit the gas pedal (engine off/key on 3 times - full stroke). The light will start blinking and will finally go away. As far as the low fluid light. Check your engine oil and coolant levels.

As for the check engine light - take the car somewhere to have the OBD2 diagnostic codes read. Write them down and come back here and post them.

Replacing flasher aka flasher relay, hazard

you will need a set of narrow flat-head screwdrivers.

Use the screwdrivers to remove the center air vent. This is glued in and there are three minor locking tabs that hold it in on the top and bottom. The middle tab is a little bigger than the ones (2) toward the sides. The whole vent will come out completely.

The flasher trim plate also comes off if you want to (use very small flathead screwdrivers), but it isn't necessary.

Once the center air vent is out there are two locking tabs that hold the unit into the dash. Put you hand in there and squeeze the two (you will can only see the one) tabs together and the unit will easily pull out. (The tabs are toward the socket end.) Place the unit on the top of the radio. Remove the wire socket connector to the flasher by pushing on the tab and removing the socket.

This is the hard part: May need two people.

Use two screwdrivers simultanously and push in the green tabs and drive the switch out forward from the mount.

Replace switch.

This whole process should take less than 1/2 hr. Once you do it the first time it may take 10 minutes max. I did it with one person.

I just got the car read and the codes that came back were:

0385 -crankshaft position sensor "B" circuit

1372 -crankshaft position sensor "A" & "B" correlation error

The garage said that the sensor would cost $175 to order. I live in Canada, but am going to the states in a few weeks. Is the sensor cheaper there?

I can't remeberwhat I paid for mine but I believe it was under $100 USD. Not much help, huh. I can tell you that is a common symptom of the CPS and it is engine temperature related. Once it warms up it will usually be ok until you shut the engine off and it cools down again. It is located behind the starter. If you do a search here for crankshaft sensor you will probably find instructions on replacing it. Good luck.
