Cold start+exhaust

I was a little shocked to see my service engine light on when I jumped in the truck today (i'm assuming that's what it was, it was an outline of an engine). I had let my truck warm up about 15 minutes, but I figured it had to be something saying it wasn't fully warmed up yet. So I'm driving and right when the temp gauge reaches one notch under 210 it goes off. Is this normal? My buddy said it was because of the exhaust (flowmaster) or something like the engine wasn't picking up heat off of it. I don't know. Anyways, I hope i'm not the first to experience this, and if anyone of you guys have, could you explain it a little?

Re: Cold start+exhaust

I hate to say this but your buddy is sniffing something. It is not normal for the enging light to come on ever. It only comes on if there is a problem. It could be something as simple as you recently refilling with gas and the system is telling you that you did not put the gas cap on right which is crap, how can a person get that wrong. Mine did that to me once. Or it could be something other than that, only way to tell is to have it scanned.

Actually he knows more about cars then probably me and everyone here combined. But to the gas cap thing. I let my girlfriend take the truck to quiktrip, and the next day I got a message on my DIC that said "tighten gas cap." But why would the light go off at a little under 210 degrees?

Re: Cold start+exhaust

Well i have dual exhaust on my truck and it gets cold here , -55ºc last winter without a windchill and my engine light never comes on if it is cold. I think it is just a coincidence that it went out when it did. The light comes on when there is a problem present but usually does not stay on unless it is a serious problem, and if it flashes it is really serious.
