When you clean out an older engine with heavy deposits, that can happen

So what you just said was the engine was not well kept BEFORE the switch to synthetic and the problem was the fact that a good choice was not used when it was needed?????? Maybe?????

Re: Switch from conventional Oil to Synth

Well, from what I can tell there are a lot more people for synthetic oils. I already bought 6qts and a filter. I am going to pick up my truck from the delaership tomorrow, and this weekend I will change oil.

Is there any real results for better MPG from synthetic oil? Thats a possibility that I had not considered...

No, the oil was change every 3000-5000 miles,I just think the synth oil did it job by cleaning all that dirt, other crap off the seals and in the engine ,since it was 1997 camry with that many miles it started to ahve a oil leak, not a heavy one,but you could tell there was a leak, maybe a quarter size in the morning. Nothing major. But i thought i would give him a warning about it.I would say if you been using just regular oil and you pass 80,000 miles I would say stick with it unless you want a small oil leak.Since your under 40 that's not bad, i would give it a shot.

I'm not against synth oil, heck I have it in my truck right now, amsoil and it works very well.I would just warn people about older engines and synth oils..

Re: Switch from conventional Oil to Synth

now when it comes to ur mom's car, like yeah it probably had a really hard/cracked up gasket/seal, i know that all mobil 1 products contain a perfect balance of seal conditioners/softeners, but still i mean that aint gonna stop it if ur seals sux, i have seen car's with that many miles switched to synth without probs but i assume they had healthy gaskets, tho i would NEVER wait that long to switch a car to synth, so I HAVE NO CLUE why they did that on ur mum's car

yeah it's cool to switch, well idk the weights are up to u, i mean the oil companies say u can use just about anything u want, JUST BE SMART ABOUT IT, i don't give a f what the manual says, TO A CERTAIN EXTent, like u can play with it a bit, as long as u aint under warrenty, i wouldn't switch if u have leaks or unhealthy gaskets, cuz that can make more leaks, also mobil 1 and the GC/Green tint 0W-30 are great they are real PAO/Ester based synthetic oils, everything else suxxxxxxx and is petroleum based hydrocracked crap oil i mean they are superior to all other conventional oils, but they aren't as good as pao/ester based oils, royal purple, and redline oil are great, amsoil=Best, now the reason synthetics are superior to conventional oils is that they're molecules are of a uniform size so that everything is far better protected, they don't burn off as easily, and are well JUST WAY SUPERIOR, anyway, oh and that STUPID saying that u can't switch back to conventional well BULLSHIT, why the hell do u think it says COMPATIBLE WITH ALL CONVENTIONAL OILS on the back of the friggen bottle, so don't let anyone tell u that u can't, i mean that was maybe the case with early early early synthetics but no more, Also ur motor will be a heck of a lot cleaner with synthetics, conventional oils leave all kinds of crap behind, but like i said dont' waste ur money on the petroleum based synthetics, and the 3k oil change thing is crap to, i know a guy who used the GC in his bmw and the computer never called for an oil change until like 17,500 miles later, GM engineers say that the average life expectancy with most (conventional) oil is like just over 8,000 miles, amsoil offers oil change intervals of up to 25,000 and 35,000 miles if u use their filters changing them every 12,500 miles topping off the oil a tthat time, also royal purple and redlinoil i believe say that uc an use their oil for 12,000 miles, mobil 1 extended performance goes for like 15, i've done it on one filter with the mobil 1 EP, yeah 3k is a scam, i would run mobil clean 5,000 for 5k like it says with a quality filter if using conventional oil,oh yeah and when it comes to oil filters FRAMS SUCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I guess I figure if you have to change the oil filter every 3K to 5K - might as well change the oil at the same time. Especially the case - the newer Silverados with the oil monitor is monitoring the oil for usability as I read on one of the other threads (monitors not how clean - but lubricant capability).

Input appreciated.

For us folks in the northern climates, another benefit is easier cold weather starts. With synth, you don't have that deep frozen sludge-like consistency on sub-zero mornings.
