Drilling holes in exhaust tips?

A friend was telling me about doing this and I was wondering if it would work. He said to drill a hole in each exhaust tip so the water will drain out and it would prevent rusting. What are your thoughts on that? (or should I just cut off the tips and go to turndowns? )

Spend the extra money and get stainless tips, mine were an extra 20 dollars, the chrome rusts quickly. The polished stainless i have are easily cleaned and shined up. Ive had the tips on my truck for 3 years and not a spot of rust, the truck has been in snow, salt, mud and not a spot of rust yet. Thats my suggestion.

Re: Drilling holes in exhaust tips?

Yeah I had Stainless on my last car they last with no wear and tear. I would go stainless again.

As for your original question yes drilling holes in the bottom of cupped end exhausts does work. My Father did it on his T-Bird and still has the chrome tips to this day.

Re: Drilling holes in exhaust tips?

The chrome tips i used to have on the 96 sierra i used to own rusted all to hell in the first year and they were the 4" slashcut ones so there was no place for water to build up inside them , and imo they rust on the outside not the inside.

I'll try and get some pics of the tips by friday, I work at night and sleep during the day. My tips are 3.5" slash cut. No drilling required.

Re: Drilling holes in exhaust tips?

Damn, I should've gone stainless.

Then again, I've had my chrome tips nearly a year and no rust yet (knocks on wood).

Anyone in Austin/Round Rock know of a place that'll de-weld chrome and put stainless on for cheap?
