Exclamation Automatic Shift Problem

I own a 2001 Spectra and I have a problem with my automatic shift: It won't come out of "Parking". The shift button is locked.

I've tried every thing (I guess). The car starts fine and the break lights are ok. I tried to turn the key (not starting the engine), put it into "Neutral" end then start the car, but the shift handle still wouldn't move.

Does anyone know what else I should do?

Thanks!

Not sure about the Spectra, but many cars have an interlock cable operated by a solenoid that prevents a person from shifting out of Park unless the car is on and the brake is depressed. Your cable or the solenoid could be not working correctly (I used to work for a manufacturer of such cables). If it is sticky, it could fail to activate and release your gear selector. One solution is to look for a small cover on the shift selector- probably a round plastic trim piece about a half inch in diameter. Pry it loose, then press down in the hole with a narrow-bladed flat or small phillips head screwdriver; this is a manual release to be used if the cable sticks.

If this allows you to shift, your cable or solenoid is bad and should be replaced.

Good luck!

Re: Automatic Shift Problem

I believe the spectra has two of these actuator solenoids that should fire to get it to move out of park... one with the button you press on the shift lever and the other fires when you press the brake.
